In the Old West, a rancher's brand was generally known to other cattlemen, and it collected a reputation around it. Certain brands meant buyers were assured of healthy, well cared for stock, and that the owner was an honest rancher. That kind of reputation could not be bought. Today's brands collect reputations around them as well, and those reputations are symbolized by the corporate logo or trademark.
